Every year, spring comes around to spoil us with many hours of sunshine, glistening snow and pleasant temperatures, attracting a very special group of winter sports fans to the skiing area Bad Kleinkirchheim: it’s the fair-weather skiers. Kathi and Andrej fall into this group of skiers who enjoy their skiing sunny side up and in this blog article they reveal their best tips for perfect skiing in the sun. So swap your reading glasses for a pair of sunglasses and join them on a day of skiing that feels like the perfect holiday!
1. Enjoy the sun-drenched ski slopes.
To catch as many rays of sunshine as possible, Kathi and Andrej prefer skiing on the slopes around the Biosphärenparkbahn Brunnach, the Spitzeckbahn and the Nockalmbahn. Not only are they particularly sun-kissed, but thanks to our experienced slope team they’re also always perfectly groomed – ideal conditions for the ultimate spring skiing experience, which Kathi and Andrej make sure to enjoy to the max. Join them on their favourite sun skiing route in this video. Press play and off you go!
2. Relax in a deckchair with the sun on your face.
As well as working up a sweat on the sunny slopes, Kathi and Andrej also look forward to taking some time out to relax in a deckchair. There are plenty of “tanning stations” in the skiing area, for example at the mountain stations of the Spitzeckbahn and Strohsackbahn or at the valley stations of the Muldenlift and the Priedröflift. You can recognise them on the panoramic map by the pink deckchair symbol. Feel free to take a seat any time as you ski past, enjoy the mountain panorama and recharge your batteries.
3. The perfect outfit for springtime temperatures.
There’s no such thing as bad weather, just unsuitable clothing – this applies to skiing in the sun as well. When springtime temperatures hit the slopes, the onion look is all the rage, making sure you don’t overheat or freeze. Our two ski pros have also been seen sporting this attire several times. Their recommendation for the perfect outfit includes:
✔ Moisture-regulating functional underwear as a base layer
✔ A lightweight fleece jacket as a mid-layer
✔ A breathable ski jacket as a wind breaker
Generally speaking, winter clothing with breathable options is always a good solution at this time of year. And for a pit stop in the sun? It’s ski helmet off – ski buff or thin cap on! Your socks can also be a little more airy in spring – manufacturers now offer a wide selection.
4. Caring for your skis properly for warmer days on the slopes.
Do you ever feel like some days your skis are sticking to the snow? Warmer temperatures and wet snow in the spring can sometimes slow you down, but the ski pros have the following tips to care for your skis properly:
✔ Proper waxing: Use soft to medium-hard warm wax for temperatures around 0 to +10 degrees.
✔ Fine grooved structure: Having a well-structured tread surface helps to drain water better and avoid soaking effects.
✔ Smooth edges: Rounded edges provide better grip and smoother skiing on soft snow – which is why the following rule applies: Don’t grind your skis too aggressively!
✔ The necessary fine-tuning: Before setting off, polish the base to remove excess wax and get the most out of the gliding properties.
Now you’re perfectly equipped for springtime snow conditions!
5. Sun protection for more fun in the sun.
So that you can enjoy the long sunny ski days to the full, it’s important to make sure your skin is well protected from the intense sunlight on the mountain.
Kathi and Andrej swear by:
✔ Special mountain sun creams with a high fat content & SPF 50 – to protect your skin against strong UV radiation & from drying out.
✔ A pair of high-quality ski goggles with UV protection – for perfect vision in changing light conditions.
✔ With tinted or mirrored lenses – for extra protection and just to make you look cool.
6. Time to soak up the sun.
Whether tanning in the chairlift or on the sun terrace of an alpine ski lodge – for Kathi and Andrej, the best thing about sun skiing is soaking up the sun and the vitamin D. Numerous lodges with panoramic terraces across the skiing area are waiting for you to come, take a break, get a tan and savour the regional delicacies.
And if you want to end the day in a particularly memorable way, you can stay until the last descent at 4.30pm and enjoy the sunset atmosphere. Because when the sun slowly disappears behind the mountain peaks and bathes the snow-covered slopes in a magical light, there’s only one question left: Could there be a nicer way to end a day on the slopes?
